What If I've Had Spinal Surgery?

"If I've already had spinal surgery, but continue to have pain, can I still try spinal decompression therapy?"

This treatment can help patients with back pain after failed spinal surgery, unless hardware (screws, rods, etc) have been implanted in the spine. Decompression can be performed in most patients who have not been left with an unstable spine after surgery.

An initial consultation, examination, and spinal x-rays will let us know what type of surgery you've had. If you're not sure if you're a candidate for treatment, a first visit will take care of that.

Do I Need an MRI or CT Scan Before I Start Decompression?

Before you do anything related to your spine, first sit down and let's talk about your case history. How long have you had this problem? What have you already done to try and make it better?

If you need an MRI or CT scan, we'll definitely let you know before we begin. We want you to get results, and we want to make sure everything is good before we begin treatment.

These tests help to determine how severe the spine is damaged, and is helpful in determining how many treatments will be required. A full examination and spinal x-rays will be necessary prior to the first decompression pull to rule out any contraindications.

Does Decompression Hurt?

Many patients ask about spinal decompression when they come into our chiropractic office. They really want to know if it hurts, and more importantly, if it's safe.

Spinal decompression therapy is extremely gentle and virtually pain-free. Most patients once they get used to the belts, find the pulling very relaxing and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during their treatment.

Patients with conditions that may compromise the integrity of the spinal column, such as gross osteoporosis, spondylolisthesis (grade 2 and above), recent fractures, tumours, aneurysms or congenital pars defects are not candidates for this kind of treatment.
